The Custódio brothers are the secret behind the stock at Locomotiva Discos, one of the vinyl scene's newer arrivals. Record collectors since the late 1990s, when they were sworn metalheads, Márcio and Gilberto now co-own the cosy, orange-walled shop that draws fans of indie rock, classic rock, soul, funk, Brazilian music, metal and punk. The collection as a whole comprises nearly 10,000 records, some imported and some local, with original releases as well as re-releases. 

The store opened in January 2011 and quickly became a go-to spot for vinyl in São Paulo. ‘Vinyl culture is still around, in spite of the internet,’ says Márcio, who also DJs. ‘People always ask our advice on what to buy, especially new bands. And more young people are buying vinyl. The sound is superior and more full-bodied – it preserves all the music’s nuances.’

The brothers also sell on the e-commerce website Mercado Livre (mercadolivre.com.br) and six months after opening the shop, Márcio started up a monthly record fair, Feira de Discos.
